ABOUT WEM
WHO ARE WE
Women in Engineering at Monash (WEM) is a student-run society that aims to inspire and support women-identifying students.
Founded in 2012, the club has seen astonishing growth over time, with well over 500 members in addition to 12 participating sponsors as of this year.
Although events are primarily targeted towards the female minority, WEM values inclusivity and welcomes all STEM students to come and participate.
WHAT WE DO
WEM primarily seeks to empower women with a specific focus on creating an interpersonal support network among the fellow women-identifying community, peers, and professionals alike.
Furthermore, an emphasis is placed upon providing the necessary resources to develop leadership, confidence and other essential skills in order to facilitate a smooth transition into the workforce.
Every year, WEM collaborates closely with companies and similar groups across the university to deliver our plethora of social, academic, industry and outreach events.
As a result, we strive to produce both personal and professional enrichment opportunities for our members while nurturing an environment in which gender diversity may thrive.
Our largest event of the year is our Industry Guide Launch. With the involvement of our sponsors, members are able to gain valuable insight into the experiences of leading women in engineering while forming tangible connections through interaction and discussion.
Highly anticipated events such as Trivia Night, Bowling and our Bar Night also allow members to socialise and build rapport with one another in a more relaxed setting.
AIMS + OBJECTIVES
WEM aims to promote and support females in engineering. WEM does this through our seven aims of:
Creating a support network to help the female identifying minority group enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering with university and early professional life
Promoting a commitment to gender diversity and inclusion within all club relationships (including, but not limited to, students and staff in the engineering faculty and industry representatives)
Educating, involving and promoting all genders in engineering to become future leaders who support diversity in engineering, in particular, gender diversity
Increasing awareness of WEM and the purpose of WEM to students, other relevant clubs and industry
Raising awareness about the issues faced by female identifying engineering students amongst male identifying engineering students
Providing a data driven approach when consulting on changes to policy involving gender diversity
Promoting engineering as a career for female identifying students
